Lawrence's Abby Crutchley Selected as winner in McGraw-Hill Education Art Contest

“Every vote counts” rang true for Abigail “Abby” Crutchley as the Slackwood School (SL) community learned December 5, 2011 of her selection as a winner in a national art contest from McGraw-Hill Education. Abby, a SL 3rd grader, was one of 72 finalists selected from over 2,400 entries nationwide that demonstrate what math means to the young artist through sculpture, drawing, painting and photography. McGraw-Hill Education’s “This is My Math” student art contest engaged students in grades K-5 in the real-world use of math outside of the classroom.

Abby’s winning art entry will be on the cover of the new third grade math book within McGraw-Hill’s newest elementary math program “My Math,” as related by Linda Freedman, a McGraw-Hill sales rep in the School Education Group who was on hand for Slackwood’s winning announcement. In addition, Abby’s entry will be one of the twelve winning selections to be displayed at the new Museum of Mathematics when it opens next year in New York City. Abby’s school, teachers and classmates will receive nearly $15,000 in fun and functional classroom prizes including a Smartboard and a computer.

News from LMS

As we move forward with our 1-1 initiative, some students have found that the batteries are not lasting throughout the day.  Please make sure the students are turning off their computers when they are charging and they leave them off until they arrive in their first period class.  This change can make the difference and allow them to last throughout the day.

Thank you for your help.

7th Grade Laptop Pick-up

7th Graders

Parents of rising 7th graders who were already issued a computer last school year can also schedule a time to pick up their child's laptop.

A maximum of 5 students can be accommodated per time slot and the slots are available on a first come, first served basis. Since the 7th grade students are already familiar with their laptops, the pickup should only take 15-30 minutes. Signups are available at http://www.ltps.org/LaptopGrade7.

For all pickup dates, a parent/guardian AND the student must attend. Important topics such as basic care of the computer, insurance, district policies & procedures, and parent/student responsibilities will be discussed at the time of distribution.

Relay for Life Update

May 20--Tonight's Relay For Life is moving indoors to Lawrence High School. Participants should park in the high school parking lot and enter via the high school main entrance. Come join us!

End of Course Algebra Exam

May 20, 2011

Dear Middle School Parents/Guardians:

Lawrence Middle School will be administering the state mandated End of Course Algebra Assessment on Monday, May 23rd and Tuesday, May 24th.  The test must be administered to all students currently enrolled in a qualified algebra course during the 2010-2011 school year.

Test takers will report to their assigned testing location at their scheduled time.  Students will be informed of their testing location via math classes and charts prominently displayed throughout the building.

Students not testing will follow the regular bell schedule.

These tests are a valuable tool in determining the effectiveness of mathematics instruction throughout the state and on a national basis.  We ask your support in reinforcing the importance of this Algebra test to your sons and daughters.  Students must make every effort to be in attendance for this test administration and should come to school well rested. Any student that is not present during the regular test administration will participate in a make-up session on May 25th and May 26th, 2011.

Thank you for your understanding of these special testing arrangements.  Given the significance of the test, we appreciate your continued support of our efforts to provide the best environment for all of our students.

Sincerely,

Andrew Zuckerman

LMS Principal

LMS Supports Relay for Life

LMS students and staff created ribbons of support for tomorrow’s Relay for Life event.  They not only showed support for the different types of cancer, they showed support for loved ones who have been effected by this disease.  Although we have been doing events to raise awareness, this has brought the students and staff together more than we could have imagined.  The support they have shown to each other and their loved ones is truly moving.  I am proud to be part of this school.

Here Comes The Sun!

We are pleased to announce that, with our recent sale of our Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs), we have reached the million dollar mark in revenue generated by our solar program. This is an amazing accomplishment when you think that today’s sale of SRECs occurred on the one year anniversary of our first sale last year. (That means $1,000,000 in one year!) We want to thank all of you for your initial support of our solar project when we went out for the referendum. We still remain the only district in the state to have such an extensive array of solar panels on every one of our schools. When we finish our final installations later on this year, we will have filled up every suitable inch of rooftop space. Kudos also go to our Board of Education and Tom Eldridge for their foresight in this project which is but one example of why we are able to craft an effective 2011-2012 budget that is less than last year. Congratulations!
